ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES

Constantinos Daldakis is a Greek born artist working and living in Athens. He studied Fine Art (BA) at the Athens School of Fine Arts and Digital Arts (MA). In his practice he explores time-space relationships with conceptual references in Heidegger’s Being and time, through a variety of mediums including digital arts, video and sound installations, sculpture and painting. He has received several awards and distinctions including Research & Art Competition and Exhibition ICRI (2014), Hellenic participation in “London 2012 Olympic Sport & Art Contest” ,the 5th prize in new media at “Florence biennale” (2005), 4th prize Heineken Art at “Melina Merkouri” Athens culture space in 1996. His work has also exhibited at the “Black Duck” Athens art space, “Bellonio” culture space Santorini, and he has also participated in the 2nd Athens digital film festival (2012), International Film Festival in Patras (2011), International Biennale of Modern Art in Florence (2005) and International Comic Festival in Athens (2001).

Christina Mitrentse is an international multidisciplinary London based artist, freelance curator and educator. She is known for constructing provocative narratives and poetic ensembles of idiosyncratic institutions through manifold processes of vintage book-sculpture, drawing, screen-printing, and productions of site-specific installations. With an A.Onassis foundation fellowship Mitrentse awarded an MFA and P.G dip. from Chelsea College of Art & Design and PGCE from Uni. of Greenwich London. She has exhibited extensively in solo and group shows in galleries, museums and public spaces including Liverpool Biennial UK, XV Biennale de Mediterranean Thess/niki-Rome, ICA London, NDSM-werf Amsterdam, Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art, Nadine Feront Gallery Brussels, Departure Foundation London, Dalla Rossa Gallery London, Royal Academy, The Stephen Lawrence Gallery, Mitte Gallery Barcelona, Central Booking NY. Andy Charalambous is a London based artist who works in a variety of media that includes digital video, sculpture, installation and intervention. He takes a single idea or scientific concept and produce work that communicates by creating emotional reaction, but provides the opportunity to explore a deeper meaning and understanding of the science. Most of his artwork is inspired by science. He is Artist in Residence for the HEP group at University College London. This provides him with inspiration for his work as well as providing opportunities for projects which bring artists and scientists together.

Anna Dumitriu’s work is at the forefront of art and science collaborative practice, with a strong interest in the ethical issues raised by emerging technologies. Her installations, interventions and performances use a range of biological, digital, and traditional media including live bacteria and textiles. She is artist in residence on the Modernising Medical Microbiology Project at The University of Oxford and has exhibited at The Science Gallery in Dublin, The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Taipei, and The V & A Museum in London. Her exhibition “The Romantic Disease: An Artistic Investigation of Tuberculosis” is currently touring internationally.

Yannis Melanitis work initiates from an intense conceptualization on the strategies of the contemporary artist and the artwork itself, deviating from its epistemological origins, implying the use of heterogeneous artistic media, through installations, performances, critical texts, sculptures, paintings and drawings.He holds degrees in painting, sculpture and digital arts from the Athens School of Fine Arts and is presently a PhD candidate at the School of Architecture, in Athens. Among his solo exhibitions are at the National Museum, Brasil; Biblioteque of Brasil; and the Tongeren Museum and Praetorium, Belgium. Lives and works in Athens.

Artemis Papageorgiou is an architect and multimedia artist working with interactive technology. Her inspiration derives from the urban condition, transitional landscapes, terrain vagues, gardens, early machines, urban and social utopias. She explores these concepts through large-scale interactive installations and hybrid objects while aiming at the active participation of audiences. A contributor to the maker movement, Artemis has co-founded Athens Plaython and teaches workshops on art & electronics. She has recently shown her work at the Art Foundation (Athens 2014), Piksel (Bergen 2013), ArtUp! (Sofia 2013), Digital Futures Victoria & Albert (London 2013).

Stelarc performs with prosthetics and robotics. His projects include Third Hand, Exoskeleton, Extended Arm, Prosthetic Head and Ear On Arm, a surgically constructed ear that will be internet enabled. In 1996 he was made Honorary Professor of Art and Robotics at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh and in 2002 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by Monash University, Melbourne. In 2010 he was awarded the prestigious Ars Electronica Hybrid Arts Prize. He is presently Distinguished Research Fellow and Director of the Alternate Anatomies Lab, School of Design and Art, Curtin University, Perth. His artwork is represented by Scott Livesey Galleries, Melbourne.

Mikhail Karikis is a Greek-born and London-based artist whose practice emerges from his ongoing exploration of the role of sound and the human voice in creating a sense of collectivity that shapes people’s lives and professional identities, and challenges dominant political and cultural conventions. Karikis’s work has been exhibited widely including at 19th Biennale of Sydney (2014); Assembly, Tate Britain (2014); Aichi Triennale, Japan (2013); Manifesta 9, Belgium (2012); Danish Pavilion, 54th Venice Biennale (2011). Forthcoming solo shows includeChildren of Unquiet at Galeria Eduardo Fernandes in Sao Paulo (BR) and at Villa Romana in Florence (IT).

Marilena Synodinou has recently completed a degree in fine art in ASFA, having a former educational and professional background as an architect. She has attended art and architecture related workshops at the London Architectural Association and the Bartlett, the Antwerp Royal Academy of fine art/ in-situ department, and a Land art workshop in Scotland. Previous personal works and collaborations have been presented at HDLU/Croatia, the 4th Athens Biennale (as member of the Value Workshop), the Athens Festival ’09 , the 14th Athens International Comics Festival, Taf: metamatic, Gounaropoulos museum and Stockwell Studios London. She currently lives and works in London.

John Georgakakis graduated from the School of Fine Arts (1968 – 1975). For his degree in Fine Art he wrote his thesis on “Point and geometric shapes in the visual perception of space.” This work is part of the evolution of the study in the article entitled “Artistic approach to squaring the circle”. As a student he was a member of the “Student Polytechnic Committee” during the period of 1971-1974. He worked as a professional journalist to Athens newspapers and magazines ( To Vima , Ta ​​Nea , Postman , Eleutherotypia etc)

Xenophon Mousas is an astronomer, professor of Space Physics, director of the University Observatory at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens . Protagonist of the study of the Antikythera Mechanism. His research is focusing on cosmic radiation , space , planets , sun, chaos . He has received awards from NASA, 2009, American Geophysical Union, 2000, published 100 scientific articles , hundreds of entries ( Encyclopedia Publishing Athens ) , Space Physics book , Greek Open University , 2003 , book Antikythera Mechanism , Union of Greek Physicists , 2011/2012 . The works have been exhibited at NASA, UNESCO, Children’s Museum of Manhattan , Library of Alexandria , Goustaviano Museum Uppsala , Poland , Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, Munich , Slovakia , United Kingdom , Portugal , Algeria , Greek Schools- Universities .

Yannis Tzortzis was born in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, Greece. He studied photography in London and he is a Member of the «Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain (RPS) » and the «Photographic Circle, Greece». He is an Attorney at Law, PhD, at the Supreme Court of the «Regulatory Authority for Energy, Greece» and the President of the non for profit organisation for the development of environmental photography «Green Project», whose green photo journeys have been held under the auspices of the Hellenic National Commission for UNESCO.
He has been awarded the prizes: 2014 «First Prize» of the «Energy Community Secretariat International Photo Competition» of the European Union, Vienna, Austria, 2012 «Official Selection» in the «International Photographic Festival», Shanghai, China, 2010 «Grand Prize for International Participation» in the «Festival de l’ Image Environnementale», Paris, France, 1998 «Grand Award» in the «International Photo Competition» of «Το Vima» newspaper and the «Greek Tourism Organisation», Athens, Greece,1996 & 1997 «Jessop Group/Solihull Centre Awards», London, England and 1993 «RPS Travelling Photographer of the Year Prize», London, England.
