Cafés Scientifiques of last year’s Athens Science Festival

1 November, 2016 News

Although we drank no coffee in cafés scientifiques, the rich range of topics discussed by prominent scientists made us feel a similar pleasure and stimulation as the ones you get from the first sip of warm coffee in the morning.

The first day of the festival began with a taste of a popular Greek science TV series, “The Universe I Loved”: Firstly, Startos Theodosiou opened our eyes “to the Earth and the Cosmos”, while talking about the nature of reality. Shortly after that, it was Manos Danezis’ turn. We discussed with him about the pivotal role of science in the formation of a New Civilization, a home for Homo Universalis and not Homo Sapiens.

Thursday was devoted to our furry friends. Maria Linou explained how everyone is in a constant interaction with the animals and the environment and answered our questions about living with them, while we were thinking of getting one – more – pet!

On Friday we discussed about something that, especially here in Greece, we can see and enjoy – almost- everyday, the Sun. Ioannis Daglis talked to us about the tempestuous relation between Sun and Earth and about how Sun’s “mood swings” can significantly influence our planet.

The weekend in Technopolis started with a trip to the story of the cosmos. Giannis Ntalianis and Stathis Antoniou from National Technical University of Athens described in simple words the explosive beginning of our universe. On Sunday, Ioannis Papadogonas presented the book “9 algorithms that changed the future”.

Sunday night found us in Neoi Fournoi, where cafés scientifiques took place, disappointed on one hand, since the festival was coming to an end, but on the other hand very excited and eager for next year’s festival. See you next year, then, for even more science discussions in Athens Science Festival from March 28th to April 2nd 2017.
