Asymmetry is the rule rather than the exception in nature –from chiral molecules to the universe itself! Humans are also asymmetric –just think of our hearts seated in our left side. Our brain is also asymmetric. For example, our left hemisphere allows us to speak. But why is it that the right side wins when it comes to our hands and the left side when it comes to our brains? Why wouldn’t we rather be left-handed and “speak” with our right hemispheres? How is this asymmetry generated? Why did brain asymmetry evolve in humans and other species?
