Genetically modified organisms are an integral part of our everyday life. They are used to produce a plethora of pharmaceutical remedies, while their products are constituents of many foodstuffs. Nowadays, they also embody the “Trojan Horse” of humanity on major environmental problems of our planet and its perspective to sustain life. However, their potential is not widely known, while their necessity is questionable and attracts strong criticism. The aim of this lecture is to inform the public about the modern methodologies used to create genetically modified organisms and to discuss both the benefits and the risks associated with their use.
