The Origin of Mass: A Strong Force Tale!

A talk to familiarize the public with particle physics. Τhe four fundamental forces of nature will be presented (i.e. Gravity, Electromagnetism, Weak and Strong forces), followed by the Standard Model of the fundamental interactions of particles, and focusing on Quantum Chromodynamics, the theory which describes the strong interactions between the quarks and the gluons. In addition, the origin of Mass will be explained: how the protons and neutrons, from which we are made of, have mass, although they consist of massless gluons, massless quarks and nothing else!

Participants:
Andreas Athenodorou: Postdoctoral Researcher

Andreas Athenodorou graduated from the Physics Department of the University of Cyprus in 2004 and completed his doctoral studies in Theoretical Particle Physics at the University of Oxford in 2009. Andreas held postdoctoral positions at DESY Zeuthen, Swansea University and at the University of Cyprus. In addition he worked as a fixed-term Lecturer and Assistant Professor at the University of Cyprus teaching undergraduate courses. Andreas is now a post-doctoral fellow at The Cyprus Institute and a work package leader in the VI-SEEM project. At the same time he is investigating applications of Machine Learning in Statistical Physics and Lattice Gauge Theories.
