Georgia Maniati: “Giving Voice to Machines: My Story”

3 October, 2023 News

In our contemporary world, we encounter a multitude of intelligence models on a daily basis. These include applications that recognize our voices, keyboards that correct or predict the words we intend to use, and navigation apps that provide directions. Have you ever wondered who is responsible for developing these applications? What type of education is necessary to pursue a career in this field?

Georgia Maniati will be presenting at the Athens Science Festival on Tuesday, October 10th, at 20:30. She will introduce us to the field of Computational Linguistics, which combines artificial intelligence and language.

In her speech titled “Giving Voice to Machines: My Story“, the accomplished scientist will share her unique career journey. Following a non-linear path, she entered the field of artificial intelligence, commencing with studies in the humanities. She will explain how she teaches machines to “speak” and emphasize the value of interdisciplinary collaboration. When different fields converge, “wonders” can happen.

Additionally, she will discuss career choices in our rapidly changing world. Have you ever considered that the field you’ll work in might not have been created yet?

Join us in this fascinating talk to explore the field of language and voice technologies and be inspired by Ms. Maniati ‘s extraordinary story.

A few things about the speaker:

Georgia Maniati is a Language Engineer. She holds a degree in Philology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and a postgraduate degree in Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing from the University of Edinburgh. She works at Samsung Electronics on synthetic speech generation, a subfield of artificial intelligence that focuses on converting written text into spoken language. This technology “gives” voices to machines, making human-computer interaction more natural and facilitating our access to the world of information.
