Luck in science and in life: irrationality or surprise?

2 April, 2016 News

What is luck … from a scientific point of view? What role does it play in everyday life? In the behaviour of atoms and molecules? In the creation of the Universe? Is it present in fundamental science concepts like time, light, numbers, infinity? Is there any science behind games of chance? And is it possible to get six times double sixes in backgammon? Finally, are there researchers studying luck?

In this science café, writer and civil engineer George Pampoukis, whose book: “Luck: the unsolved, contradictory entity that dominated the human path…” inspired this event and Vasilis Konstantoudis, Physicist, researcher at NCSR Demokritos, try to unveil the many faces of luck and their relation with science, art, language, information, even law. The audience participates in an active way, naturally in a …randomly structured discussion, through a playful interaction with the presenters.

The event will take place at Athens Science Festival on Saturday 9 April 2016 at 19.00. The café facilitator is Anna Christodoulou, Physicist, SciCo project leader.
