Workshops of Change for Educators: Sustainability in the classroom

7 April, 2024 News

As our planet faces unprecedented environmental challenges, our educators have the power to inspire future generations to adopt a more responsible lifestyle.

But how can we effectively integrate sustainability education into our classrooms? At Athens Science Festival 2024, through a series of Workshops of Change for Educators, you will discover practical strategies to help you start a meaningful dialogue about sustainability in the classroom. And inspire a new generation of responsible citizens who want to make a difference for our planet.

Alpha Bank, through the workshop “Circular Economy in Action”, will talk to us about the need to adopt a new model of production and consumption that will allow us to make the most of every available resource. During the workshop, the teachers – divided into groups – will discover circular economy practices, focusing on the school, while they will also familiarize themselves with educational techniques that they can use in their classroom. In addition, they will get to know the educational program “Circular Economy in action“, which aims to familiarize secondary school teachers and students with the principles of circular economy.

School is a particularly important environment for children, where they spend a large part of their day. It is, therefore, of vital importance, that through school life they develop habits they will carry over to their family and daily life. In this context, the Union of Environmental Scientists of Greece has designed the two-hour interactive workshop “Creating Zero Waste Schools“, for teachers of all levels. Through an experiential and collaborative learning workshop, there will be presented the principles of a sustainable lifestyle without waste, based on the practices of reuse, recycling and composting.

Roots & Shoots, an initiative by Dr. Jane Goodall, aims to promote compassion towards all living creatures, foster understanding of different cultures and beliefs, and inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for animals, humans, and the environment. Implemented in 100 countries with more than 1,000,000 active members, this program forms an international community in which young people undertake various actions with a positive impact on society.

As part of the Athens Science Festival, we invite you to get to know Roots & Shoots, which in Greece is represented by the non-profit organization Science Communication -SciCo, and discover how learning and social contribution create active citizens, willing to take action for solving local community problems. And – why not? – inspire you to start a Roots & Shoots program focused on your school’s community.

Are you an educator? We are waiting for you at the Athens Science Festival 2024 with Tales and Workshops of Change specially designed for educators who want to bring sustainability in their classroom.
